Challenger (Ages 13-15)
With our focus on individual growth and building self-confidence, nobody does teen adventure like the YMCA!  Whether you have been coming for years or this is your first time here, the Challenger program is an exciting way to spend part of the summer!

Through the flexibility to help design their own schedule, Challengers have the freedom to do all the best Flat Rock has to offer!  Some of the most popular activities include rock climbing, rappelling, riflery, mountain biking, outdoor cooking, tubing or kayaking down the river, low ropes course elements, and climbing the Alpine Tower.

The teens live in cabin with bathroom facilities.  Nightly fireside chats, a closing banquet, and other special events are also planned.   Challengers do an overnight camping trip at our Whispering Springs campsite. Challenger staff are carefully selected and work well with teens.   They are positive role models who are trained to help build character and provide quality programs in a safe atmosphere.

Leadership Development Program
(Age 15 or entering Sophomore year by the start of summer)

LDP is a two week session that blends traditional camp activities with a solid curriculum of leadership instruction.  This training will benefit participants in school, home, extracurricular activities, and all areas of their lives.  It lays a great foundation for teens interested in learning to work effectively with others.

Participants will live in cabin groups with the other teen campers.   They will have the opportunity to enjoy everyday camp activities such as kayaking, swimming, rock climbing, and archery.  They will participate in evening programs and off-site overnights with the teen campers.  During the day, they will work on building self-confidence and developing solid leadership, decision making, and communication skills.  The Leadership Development Program will partner with the Ranch Hands in order to offer our teens the best leadership training possible and build a sense of community among all participants.  Parents must pick up their campers on the weekend between the program weeks.

Counselor In Training
(Age 16 or entering Junior year by the start of summer)

The CIT program is designed to introduce teens to the knowledge and techniques they will need to work with children at camp and in other settings.   CITs will focus on listening to children, role modeling values, positive discipline, teaching new skills, leading group games, and building respect.   These lifelong talents will benefit them and all the children they serve as volunteers, mentors, employees, or as future parents.  Through leading hildren and serving as role models, CITs will find and develop their own strengths.  They live in cabin groups with the other teen campers and participate in many of the teen special events.

The goal of this two week program is to provide training to teens who sincerely want to improve their skills and become outstanding leaders - not to create future Flat Rock staff members.  Teens interested in being a CIT must submit a CIT application and three written references, participate in a phone interview, and be selected.  The registration materials will be sent out following acceptance as a CIT.   The application forms are available on the Forms page.  Parents must pick up their CITs on the weekend between the program weeks.

"The thing I like best about Flat Rock is the caring personality my child comes home with. She thinks about other's feelings and is not so self-focused."
