Flat Rock is also involved with the American Camp Association. We are fully Accredited, which means that we voluntarily meet a large set of standards involving how we wash our dishes, how we run our horseback program, how we recruit and train our staff, and even where we store gasoline for the lawnmower!
As a branch of the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis, Flat Rock staff are very involved with the activities of the whole YMCA, including YMCAs nearby. We frequently host staff meetings, and training, which may include time on our Alpine Tower or at a campfire, and always some great food from our camp kitchen!
Hoosier River Watch is a program that allows citizens to monitor the quality of streams. We share how to do these measurements with many schools that come for our Outdoor Environmental Education program. The OEE staff did a comprehensive study of the Flat Rock River, and it proved to be very clean!
Personnel from the Indiana State Natural Resource Education Center have trained our OEE staff in Project Wild, Project WET, Go FishIN', and Project Learning Tree.
In September 1999, a team of IN DNR biologists asked for and received permission to look for an unusual ecosystem on camp land called a fen. A fen is a wet area, whose chemistry is alkaline, and plants called sedges grow there. This area was actually found, on a hill overlooking the river, and camp is making plans to protect the rare plants and habitat found there. Another area of partnership is when groups come to Flat Rock, and our staff works with them to accomplish their goals.
Many schools come for Outdoor Environmental Education for program which complement the curriculum in their classroom. We make note of how our program helps meet state educational standards in science, social studies, even history. Many schools from Marion and the surrounding counties come to Flat Rock through the year to study the environment in the different seasons.
We work with a number of different organizations with weekend Group Camping programs. The Sweet Adelines regularly come out to camp for weekend practice sessions. University groups often visit Flat Rock to build stronger bonds and build team spirit, with help from our skilled staff on the teams course.
Every spring Flat Rock hosts a team of Americorps NCCC volunteers to help get the camp ready for the season. They stay with us for the months of March and April.
